Sylvia is an evaluation, community research design, and community engagement specialist born in and living on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Sylvia is a white, queer, neurodiverse cisgender woman who was born to refugee parents and is passionate about practical and meaningful inclusivity through an intersectional lens. Sylvia has extensive experience in community research and engagement, with experiencing working for and with academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and municipal government. She is committed to uplifting the voices of marginalized people, particularly sex workers and gender diverse and sexuality minority communities, in policymaking discussions.
Recent highlights of Sylvia’s work include a community participatory sex workers’ needs and risks assessment, development of guidelines for frontline workers who support victims and survivors of forced labour and sexual exploitation, and conducting community engagement with marginalized communities, including people with disabilities, im/migrants, single mothers, and youth. Across projects, Sylvia’s focus is on community inclusion and participation, as well as practical applications of collecting data, for purposes ranging from frontline accessibility to policy development.
