Health Promotion Writer and Curriculum Developer
Niki (aka Nicole) is a health promotion writer and curriculum developer living on the traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw First Nation (aka Nanaimo). She graduated with First Class Honours in Canadian and Asian History from the University of Alberta in 1995 and worked for 10 years in the English as a Second Language industry as a teacher and teacher trainer. From 2005 - 2020, she had the great privilege of working as a writer and curriculum developer for the University of Victoria’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.
These days Niki divides her time between her frontline job at an Indigenous agency and her freelance writing and consulting work for various organizations, including Changemark, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Schizophrenia Society of Canada.
Niki has written two books, including Start and Run an ESL TeachingBusiness (Self-Counsel Press, 2006), and has articles and book reviews published in dozens of newspapers and magazines, such as the National Post, Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, and Your Health Magazine. But she is most excited about the education related community partnership project she started in 2022—Side School, a mobile tutoring and mentoring service for youth who are not in school or not well-connected to school: sideschool.ca.
A bone cancer survivor who’s passionate about health–for people and the planet–Niki went vegan in 2017 and enjoys a simple lifestyle. She loves playing sports and hanging out with her daughters.
