Nicole Esligar a project and research management expert living and working on the traditional, unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She is Anishinaabe Ojibwe on her mother’s side, coming from the Roulette and Harris families of the Sandy Bay Reserve in Manitoba’s Treaty One territory, and German and English on her father’s side. In 2015 she completed her Master’s in Political Science with a focus on international aid program evaluation, before moving to work as an Indigenous Youth Worker in the Downtown Eastside.
From there, she became a Project Coordinator with a BC based research centre in 2018 and supported the design and roll-out of a provincial drug checking evaluation and research project, working closely with safe-injection sites and harm reduction organizations across BC. Nicole started work with the University of British Columbia in 2020, she worked for the Department of Emergency Medicine to support the design and delivery of a Phase III Clinical Trial evaluating the microdosing of suboxone for patients in the ER who had overdosed and led the roll out of hospital trial sites across BC and Alberta. In addition she oversaw the successful design and implementation of several Phase II and Phase III clinical trials using psilocybin and ketamine for the treatment of alcohol and substance use disorders.
Most recently at UBC, Nicole has worked on projects and been responsible for the design, delivery, and evaluation of medical education for BC Physicians. In May 2024, she started in a leadership role in the area of Indigenous community engagement, where she supports the creation of an Indigenous engagement and knowledge translation strategy for the Kelty Resource Centre. She is incredibly excited to bring her experience with program management and her passion for community-led research and engagement, along with her training in evaluation and policy development, to her work with Changemark.
