Matthew Bonn is located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. He is a current drug user who also prides himself in writing gonzo journalism and first voice academic publishing. He got started in this work by opening Atlantic Canada’s first Overdose Prevention Site in Halifax, Nova Scotia then became the Program Manager of the Canadian Association of People Who Use Drugs and Knowledge Translation advisor. He’s a freelance journalist with by-lines in Filter-Mag, The Coast, Doctors Nova Scotia, CATIE, Policy Options, and more. Matt has authored manuscripts in the areas of infectious disease, substance use and overdose. Matt’s core belief is that people who use drugs are the experts in drug policy and have been since day one, if it wasn’t for their advocacy harm reduction wouldn’t exist. While drug policy and harm reduction approaches have come a long way but believes that should have people who use drugs leading every aspect of research such as ideas, concepts, methodology design, ethics applications, recruitment, evaluation, analysis, manuscript writing, submitting to journals, and every other aspect of research we still allow academia to run this multi-billion dollar industry that should impact policy. During his downtime Matt enjoys reading, writing poetry, and watching classic films. He’s dedicated and passionate about ending the war on drugs.
